Reactive, Mutable Matter

Substance: “that which is of reactive, mutable matter.”

In the Web of Planets and Elements, it is located in the region between air and ground and corresponds to the throat chakra. Substance is always a product of refinement by artificial or natural energy input.

In Alchemy, it is much less abundant among the planets, despite sharing the second highest energy state with Essence. This energy state is only accessible during earth’s night from Mercury and Neptune. Substance is still high in entropy and reactivity which makes it the most favorable energy state for transformation with the other 3 states.

Planetary Syntheses

• The synthesis of Substance with Spirit yields the planet Mercury.

• The synthesis of Substance with Essence yields the planet Neptune.

• Substance and Matter do not interact in synthesis, as Matter merely lowers the entropy and reactivity of substance.

Substance Parameter Effects

• Higher Substance points to greater stability, durability, and persistence. Good for establishing foundations, creating lasting structures, or working with enduring materials.

• Lower Substance shows more fluid, changeable, or transitional states. Better for transformation, adaptation, or working with flexible systems rather than fixed ones.
